Thank You for the Thank Yous

Hello readers! In my “Reach Higher in 2016″post, I talked about how I want to validate people in my life more. This is mostly because I feel so special when the important people in my life validate me.

My freshman year in college, I took an ART 101 class. In ART 101 we had to create/decorate a reliquary, put something in it, and explain its importance to the class. Naturally, I decided to modge podge a box with various pictures and quotes that were meaningful to me and inside I stuffed in all the letters, cards, thank yous, and pictures that have been given to me over the years. Now, a year later, it’s almost full and I’ve resorted to sticking them on my bedroom door! Whenever I’m having a bad day I love to crack open my reliquary or read my door adornments and read all the lovely notes; it never fails to put a smile on my face.

There are people who are probably asking, “What makes a post it note so special??” Well, to answer your question: someone took the time to sit down and write me a sweet note. Time is valuable, we don’t know how much we have and it means so much that someone personally took time out of their day to make me smile. I’d rather receive a long, carefully written note instead of a gift because it means so much more.

I’d personally like to thank those who have ever written me something special and a big shout out to those who have been messaging me about how much they enjoy reading my blog. I’m glad I’m able to make your day a little brighter! I love being able to make you smile 🙂 So, sit down and write someone special a note that will make their day!

I Got It From My Momma

MY MOMMA! ISN’T SHE JUST SO ADORABLE?!?

12049487_10206558961646179_5290714645037922075_n.jpg

Today is this special lady’s birthday! In the 20 years I’ve gotten to spend with her she has given me some of the best advice and I thought I could share it with all of you beautiful people!:

  1. Never Depend on a Man (or Woman depends on your preferences)– This is her favorite and mine too. Growing up and going through various boy drama my mom always told me to never depend on a man for anything. Not for money, love, happiness, or company. YOU are able to go out and pay for your own things and make your own money. YOU deserve to be happy without being dependent on someone else’s attitude. YOU can find company/companionship with someone other than your significant other (ex. friends or family). (And my favorite) YOU need to love yourself before you can love another person, you’re allowed to be a little selfish.
  2. “It Is What It Is”– AKA shit happens and once it’s done, there isn’t always something you can go back and fix. As long as you tried your best or gave your best effort, don’t worry about it.
  3. “In 100 Years Nobody Will Care”– I embarrass myself all the time or there are times when something doesn’t go the way I planned/I don’t get my way. In these moments, I think that everyone is going to notice or think less of me, but in actuality it isn’t a big deal and in about two days either 1) no one is going to care or 2) everyone has already forgotten.
  4. “Beauty Knows No Pain”– This quote is from one of our favorite movies, Cinderella (it’s not the original version if you were curious). It takes long, hard work to get to where you want to be (ex. losing weight or trying to brush the endless tangles out in your hair) and without a little bit of pain or effort, you can’t achieve your goals.
  5. “Just Because Someone Else Is An Ass, Doesn’t Mean You Have To Be”– If there’s someone in your life who is bullying you or putting you down, there’s no reason to have to stoop to their level. If you don’t take the high road, you’re just as bad as the person doing wrong by you. Even though it’s hard to bite your tongue, do it anyway (you’ll thank my mom later)!

Now, there are probably 1,000,000 more phrases my mom says to me, but there are the most frequent. I am so thankful for my mother and I am blessed for even knowing her. She fills my darkest days with so much light and laughter. She gives me endless opportunities and blessings. She is the best mom ever and there aren’t enough “thank you’s” in the world! HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM 🙂

P.S. Listen to your mom, give her a hug, and tell her I Love You today. Trust me, it’ll make her day.

Reach Higher in 2016

It’s a little late into the New Year, but I’ve been working hard on my resolutions and I’d like to share all 10 of them with you! 🙂

IMG_6817

  1. Be a Happier Marissa– Like I said in my first blog post, I have been on a happiness journey. It has been a TON of work to have to get up everyday and tell myself today I will be happy and I will not think negative thoughts. However, it has been helping change my attitude and there is still so much more to accomplish!
  2. Eat healthier-…I’ve been lacking on this one. I have an addiction to pizza and they haven’t invented a delicious healthy pizza yet, which is extremely disappointing. So, I should probably write down “fruits and veggies” on my grocery list..
  3. Paint more– I JUST finished a new canvas! Painting helps me detox all the negative occurrences in my life, it’s amazing and I can’t wait to create more!
  4. Validate people in my life more– This is one of my favorite resolutions. There are so many kind and amazing people in my life who support me through my happiest and darkest days, so this one is for them. I want to make these special people feel appreciated because they deserve it all!
  5. Start a YouTube Channel– My dream job at the moment is to be a lifestyle/beauty guru and I’m trying to make it happen! It may seem crazy to some, but oh well they don’t have to do it!
  6. Be more adventurous– I’m a goodie goodie, I’m not afraid to admit that. I’ve always followed the rules, so I’m really trying to break out of my comfort zone here in 2016 (current update: still trying not to be afraid of getting in trouble).
  7. Write more– THIS IS SO IMPORTANT! Writing down how I feel and what’s going on in my life is helping me be more organized than I already am, as well as helping me figure out everything I am feeling/want out of life.
  8. Believe in myself more– This is a work in progress for me. I ALWAYS put others before myself because I think it’s important to listen to and be empathetic towards those who come to you and need guidance. Which is amazing and I’m not saying that’s a terrible thing to do, but I’ve put myself on the back burner and I deserve to be a little more selfish when it comes to doing whatever I put my mind to.
  9. Start a blog– ACCOMPLISHED YAY MARISSA!
  10. Become more flexible– This is a really sad resolution my friends. I’m just not bendy. I can’t cart-wheel and it hurts my back to touch my toes (which is honestly so unhealthy it’s crazy). So, I’m trying to stretch my body out and *fingers crossed* I can bend as wacky as a cooked noodle!

THAT’S THE LIST!! Even though 2016 has already begun, it’s never too late to set goals for yourself (especially if you write them down and hang them on your wall!). There are 290 days left in 2016, so let’s all try to make them count!

Artsy Fartsy

On today’s “self discovery” I want to talk about doing the activities/hobbies/things that make you the most happy! Personally, I LOVE to get down and crafty!

I could honestly paint canvases ALL DAY because I just so lost in creating something beautiful and something I can be proud of after the last stroke of the brush. Painting is also incredibly relaxing because I’m not focused on everything else I have on my plate; it’s just me, myself, and a canvas. Side note: sometimes I get too distracted when I paint and “accidentally” stay up until 3:00 AM and binge on the entire first season of Scandal…oops!

Some other crafty business I get into is scrapbooking! Sometimes I feel like a middle-aged mother documenting my children’s life, but I’m not. I’m just documenting my own life. I promise that’s not as awkward as it sounds… The whole process of taking pictures and then picking out the pictures I want to use and then choosing a layout, color scheme, and stickers/stamps/embellishments gives me an art high (which I’m pretty sure is comparable to a runner’s high). Scrapbooking is just a crafty way of journaling, so this way I’m able to go back and look at all of the amazing experiences, times, and smiles I’ve had!

My challenge to you all is to go out to Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, Joann’s, or your craft store of choice, buy a canvas, round up all the paint you think is pretty, sit down at home, and create something YOU think is beautiful (and watch Scandal if you so please ;))!

P.P.S. WARNING: Pinterest is extremely addictive.

What lifts you?

Your first blog post is supposed to be meaningful right? Or am I just making that up?… Regardless, mine will be 🙂

Since January, I’ve been on a happiness journey. I spent $66 dollars (God bless) on a planner that I religiously fill out and I talk about the highs of my day and month. I eat all the pizza I want. I try to laugh as much as I can in one day. And I’m trying to spend as much time with my friends and family as possible.

At the beginning of my journey, it was incredibly rough. I cried everyday. Didn’t talk much. Couldn’t sleep. I was on the brink of self destruction and deep down I knew something was wrong, but I didn’t know how to change my attitude. What honestly saved me was talking to the people that loved me most. My mom, dad, brother, my best friends, my sorority sisters, my lovely roommate, and my at the time significant other. At first, I would feel terrible about dumping my emotional vomit on them, but once I barfed it out I would feel the tiniest bit better. I wrote in journals, on the computer, I did anything I possibly could to try and dump the toxic thoughts out of my body. But most importantly, I began to give myself more credit than I had been.

For lent, I gave up negative thoughts (first because I’d probably keel over if I couldn’t have chocolate, second because I don’t think God wants anyone to live a depressed life).

As of now, I’ve had some bumps and bruises, but I always try to get back up on my feet no matter how hard the challenge is.

So, I challenge you to surround yourself with people who lift you higher and to love yourself. Screen Shot 2016-06-18 at 11.47.42 PM.png
